There are dozens of brands and kinds of sex lube available for people to buy to enhance their sexual experiences. Although with dozens on the market choosing one can seem confusing, all of the brands can be separated into four main groups of sex lube: Oil based, petroleum based, silicone based, and water based. All four types of sex lube are best for different activities, so read on to help you straighten the confusing mess out to find what is best for you.

An oil based sex lube is usually the preferred one for male and female masturbation. Usually made from natural oils, like nut oils and vegetable oils, an oil based sex lube provides the slipperiness that is needed for masturbation. They do, however, tend to stain bed sheets and can be hard to wash off of the body. Oil based sex lube destroys latex, compromising the strength of it within seconds, literally. They should not be used with diaphragms or condoms. Oil based sex lube also usually is not recommended for anal or vaginal intercourse, because the oil can coat the vaginal and rectal lining, which may result in infection.

A petroleum based sex lube is made from petroleum jelly, mineral oil, or petrolatum. With the increasing rise in condom use, petroleum sex lube sales are decreasing, because they destroy latex, almost instantly. Like the oil based sex lubes, they should never be used with condoms, and they too tend to stain fabrics, blankets, and bed sheets. Petroleum based sex lube can be difficult to wash off after sex as well. A product with petroleum in it tends to irritate the vagina and sometimes the rectum, so like the oil based sex lube, the petroleum based lube is recommended for masturbation only.

A silicone based sex lube is similar to the water based lubes in many ways. One of the best perks of a silicone lube that a water based lube doesnt offer is the fact that the silicone lube is waterproof. This makes it the perfect sex lube for sexual activities in the water. Silicone sex lubes keep their lubricating properties longer than water based lubes. Silicone based sex lube is also very concentrated, so even though it is more expensive than the water lube, you dont have to use as much. Silicone lubes are latex safe, but silicone toys may suffer damage from them.

A water based sex lube contains de ionized water, glycerin, and other ingredients. A water based sex lube does not stain and is safe for use with latex and rubber. Even though these lubes dry out quicker than other types of sex lube, it is cheaper also. A water based sex lube is the most commonly recommended type of lube by sex therapists.

We all know that oil as lubrication can be used on rusty door hinges, car engine lubrication, jewelry cleaning solution and even in creating a non-stick surface for Teflon pans and pots. But did you know that oil as a lubricant can be used in many other, more interesting things? Well if you don’t, then here is a list of five things you didn’t know you can use oils and lubes on.

1. Oils and Lubes for Newly Weds

Already I can see that the screen is turning a tinge of green for you but don’t let your green little minds carry you off yet since this is not what you might expect. Lubricants or lubes are substances that are have the unique quality of being able to decrease the amount of friction between two surfaces when applied and oil is a substance that has lubricating qualities.

In the case of newly weds, they might need the help of lubes and oils when trying to remove an tight fitting ring. All you need to do is pour a few drops of baby oil, body oil or even cooking oils such as vegetable oil or olive oil and that ring would easily slide off.

2. Oils and Lubes Before Going to Bed

Using oils on themselves is something many women forget to do before going to bed. Did you know that you can use oil to remove make-up? If you have notices, engine oil is also used to clean a car’s engines. In the same way, oil can be used to remove make-up on your face. When you find yourself out of make-up removers, grab a bottle of baby oil to remove eyeshadow, mascara, blush, foundation and every other make-up you painted your face with.

Not only will the make-up easily get wiped off using a cotton ball with some baby oil but this is also a very gentle and moisturizing routine that women should make sure they do every night before getting to bed to avoid clogged pores and pimples.

3. Oils and Lubes Before Puckering Up

Imagine that it is the height of winter and you are with your boyfriend or husband on a romantic date or at home by the fire. He then makes a move to kiss you but you remember a big concern, the cold temperature has made your lips chap and sore. So what do you do if you are out of lip balm? You should open your medicine closet and dab some petroleum jelly on your lips to moisturize them instantly.

Petroleum jelly as the name suggests is a petroleum product, that means it is also a by product of oil. Since oil is a hydrophobic substance (afraid of water), it would prevent further loss of moisture in your lips when applied. This famous lube or lubricant is a wonderful thing to have handy because you can use it on a lot of things. Aside from moisturizing lips and skin, you can also use petroleum jelly as first-aid treatment on minor burns, insect bites, diaper rash, or sunscreen. You can even use it as a substitute for hair pomade or mustache wax if you want.

4. Oils and Lubes For Baby Control

Did you know that oil can take credit for the creation of condoms? Well, now you do. You might be surprised at the sheer number of oil, petrochemical and petroleum products that we use or encounter in our day to day lives. Petrochemicals can be used to make not just condoms but curtains, plastic flip flops, band-aids, soapless detergents and cleaning substances, medicines, ink, polyester clothing and even music CDs and DVDs.

5. Oils and Lubes for Elderly Love

At a certain point in life, elderly couples may need the help of oils and lubes when making love. Biologically and clinically speaking, women and even men’s ability to produce natural lubricants decrease over time making it hard and painful when bedding together. But grandma and grandpa need not feel so down because science has already produced many safe and effective oil and water based lubes and personal lubricants that can make their nights as hot as when they were in their 20’s.
